‘How To with John Wilson’: A Beautifully Human Odyssey of Self-Discovery
New York City carries an energetic signature that is its own blend of beautiful, absurd, unique, complex, gorgeous, and grotesque. A typical New York day can begin with a walk in the park, which somehow will take you on a journey into the various dimensions of reality as you traverse a concrete jungle filled with visionaries, lost souls, and a plethora of personality.
The neuroses of “The City That Never Sleeps” are hard to put into words. Still, once you’ve experienced the pulse of New York’s pavement, you understand the paradoxical movement and way the city tends to take you on a hero’s journey when you’re not even trying.
Cue John Wilson
How-to With John Wilson is a new HBO series, which is refreshingly human and takes you on an odyssey of discovery in the unexpected.
Documentary filmmaker and self-described “anxious New Yorker” John Wilson serves as writer, director, cameraman, producer, and narrator of this all-new six-episode comedy docuseries. In a uniquely hilarious odyssey of self-discovery and cultural observation, Wilson covertly and obsessively films the lives of his fellow New Yorkers while attempting to give everyday advice on relatable topics. Building upon Wilson’s previously released “how-to” short films, the episodes take wildly unexpected turns but are grounded in Wilson's refreshing honesty.

It takes a certain type of talent to find a way to turn a topic like “How to Cover Your Furniture” into existential inquiry, and because of this, we have absolutely fallen in love with Wilson’s unique lens (literally and metaphorically).
"Episode 1: The Delicate Balancing Act of Making -- and Safely Redirecting -- Casual Conversation; the Risks and Rewards of Small Talk" premiered on October 23rd, 2020. The six-part series concluded with an episode on "How to Make the Perfect Risotto," which was a heart-wrenching meta-narrative about the perspective shifts that COVID-19 brought into our lives.
We highly recommend this series and believe that you will thoroughly enjoy Wilson's wonderfully weird style of filming and narration. Please leave a comment below and let us know your thoughts on the program and how it impacted you!
